All Felony Charges Against Dr. Ankita Singh Dismissed Following Reversal of Conviction

On June 2, 2026, a federal judge granted the government’s motion to dismiss all felony charges against Dr. Ankita Singh, ending a four-year legal ordeal that began with allegations arising from work she performed as an independent physician contractor.

Dr. Singh was charged in 2022 in connection with a part-time chart-review position she held between 2019 and 2021. In that role, she reviewed medical records recommending and ordering braces based on information she believed had been prepared by healthcare professionals who had evaluated patients suffering from pain and other medical conditions. Unbeknownst to Dr. Singh, many of the records contained inaccurate information, and some patients had been improperly solicited by third parties.

Following a jury trial in 2024, Dr. Singh was convicted of healthcare fraud offenses. She consistently maintained her innocence and appealed. In August 2025, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit overturned her conviction, finding significant legal errors in the proceedings. The appellate court found that the jury had not been properly instructed on a critical element of the offense: that the government was required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Dr. Singh knew at the time that her conduct was unlawful.

“The government’s case against Dr. Singh was built on fundamental mistakes and misunderstandings of both the law and the medical review process involved in this matter,” said Stephen Chahn Lee, a former federal prosecutor and senior counsel of the US Attorney's office of the Northern District of Illinois. “The prosecutors who handled this case did not even understand the elements of the crime that they accused Dr Singh of committing. If the government had conducted a proper investigation, Dr Singh would never have been charged and would not have had to go through this tragic ordeal.

After the conviction was reversed, Dr. Singh retained Mr. Lee and Mark Wagoner of Shumaker as new counsel. The government brought new felony charges against Dr Singh but then agreed to dismiss all felony charges as part of a plea agreement that Judge Jack Zouhary accepted on June 2, 2026.

“Dr. Singh was fully prepared to continue fighting these allegations and seek complete vindication at trial,” Mr. Lee said. “However, after years of litigation, extraordinary financial expense, and immense personal hardship, she agreed to a resolution that eliminated all felony exposure and brought this matter to a final conclusion.”

For Dr. Singh, the case carried consequences far beyond the courtroom. During the proceedings, she lost years of her medical career, incurred substantial financial losses, and endured damage to her professional reputation. Despite those hardships, she remained committed to serving patients and rebuilding her life and career.

“This experience has taken an enormous toll on Dr. Singh and her family,” Mr. Wagoner said. “Yet throughout this process, she never lost her dedication to medicine, her patients, or her community. We are grateful that she can now begin moving forward and continue the work she has devoted her life to performing.”

Dr. Singh expressed gratitude to her family, friends, colleagues, and supporters who stood by her throughout the case. She also expressed special gratitude to her appellate counsel, Amy Saharia and Andrew Lemens, and to Mr. Lee and Mr. Wagoner.

“While nothing can restore the years that were lost, I am thankful that this chapter has finally come to an end,” Dr. Singh said. “My focus now is on serving patients, supporting my family, and moving forward with integrity, compassion, and renewed purpose.”
